Maus:
by Art Spiegelman
Pre-reading
Strategy: Anticipation Guide
The students will each fill out this guide before we
begin reading the book. We will discuss it briefly
to see where the students stand on the issues, and then
we'll come back to it later on after we've finished the
book. The purpose of this activity is to see how
reading Maus changes their answers, if at all.
It also gives the students something concrete that they
can hold on to and return to as they read the book,
giving them reasons to think about their own answers
over a period of time. Below you can see the
actual handout (in web-friendly form) that I will give
students.
There are no correct answers to these questions. I
simply want you to think about the question, and answer
it truthfully. Read the wording carefully.
Place your answer in the column on the left, headed with
"pre-reading." We'll come back to these sheets
later, so keep them around!
